China Releases American From Prison After Nearly Two Decades

China has released David Lin, who has been imprisoned since 2006 on fraud charges, that the US believes were unjust.

David’s daughter, Alice Lin, says that she was notified of her father’s release over the weekend that he’d be coming home the following day. “We’re overwhelmed with joy, there’s so much to make up for,” she said.

A U.S. official said that China agreed to the release after a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi earlier this summer. This comes soon after National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan’s meeting with Wang in Beijing.

“We’ve been telling China that releasing American prisoners would improve relations with the U.S., and I think they got the message,” said John Kamm, founder of California based nonprofit Dui Hua Foundation.

This release raises hope for the freedom of two other U.S. citizens currently detained in China, according to sources familiar with the matter.
