USS Fitzgerald collides with container ship



  • USS Fitzgerald back home. Search and rescue continues for missing shipmates.
  • USS Fitzgerald destroyer collides with the ACX Crystal merchant vessel.
  • Incident occurred 56 nautical miles Southwest of Yokosuka.
  • Damage suffered on her starboard side above and below the waterline.
  • Some bridge damage reported, limiting communications with the destroyer.
  • Navy crew is still fighting to save the ship as of 7:50pm est.
  • Seven sailors were killed.
  • Ship commander Cmdr. Bryce Benson has been medevaced from the destroyer. Currently in stable condition at the USN Hospital Yokosuka. Executive officer has since taken command.
  • Second medical evacuation was in progress earlier.
  • Ship is taking water, but moving on its own power at about 3 knots.
  • Japanese Coast Guard to conduct medevac via helicopter for a Sailor.
  • Reports that 3 compartments have flooded.
